The World Diabetes Foundation

Sustainable care in developing countries

The World Diabetes Foundation is dedicated to supporting prevention and treatment of diabetes in developing countries. WDF focuses on the following areas:

  • dotAwareness of diabetes
  • dotPrevention of diabetes and its complications
  • dotEducation and training of patients and health care professionals
  • dotEnhancement of detection, treatment and monitoring of diabetes
  • dotRelation-building among different stakeholders such as governments, diabetes organisations, hospitals and authorities to ensure that the initiatives that have been launched continue to exist after the completion of the WDF funded projects

Since 2005 DCA has been implementing projects through our long-time partner the Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem funded by WDF.
The main goal and expected outcome of the current project running from 2010-2012 is that
the comprehensive care model for Diabetes prevention and management will be disseminated slowly but surely throughout the Palestinian health care system. The approach to this project began to take shape in 2003 with WDF support to a pioneering program at the Augusta Victoria Hospital with a view to providing all of Palestine with controlled and targeted Diabetes care. The next logical step in this process is to secure the full partnership and commitment from the Palestinian public health care system to continue this work.
With the full endorsement from the PNA Ministry of Health, the project will establish and build the capacity of a model clinic for the comprehensive care model to learn from the established and ongoing Diabetes care model in the Augusta Victoria Diabetes care center. A key part of this process will be the continued building of the capacity at the AVH Diabetes care center to continuously support the implementation of the new comprehensive care model within the PNA MoH system.
