Homeless children investigate their homes after torrential rains brought by Agatha has ravaged most of Central America |
DanChurchAid is ready to help in Central America after the tropical storm Agatha has caused death and chaos.
Guatemala has been hit the hardest where more than 27.000 people have lost their homes and at least 82 people have been killed, while 53 people are still reported missing.
More than 100.000 people have been evacuated, says DanChurchAid’s Regional Representative in Central America, Eva Pineda Hansen.
According to several local newspapers in the region, Agatha was followed by heavy rain and more than 1 meter of rain fell in parts of Guatemala.
The provinces that have suffered the most severe consequences are Chimaltenango, Quetzaltenango, Suchitepéquez, Retalhuleu, San Marcos, Sololá, Quiché and Alta og Baja Verapaz.

Agatha also struck the capital Guatemala City where heavy rain resulted in the collapse of poorly maintained sewer systems. A three story building caved in on itself and disappeared into a 60 meter deep sinkhole.
Honduras and El Salvador were struck too
In Honduras DanChurchAid’s partners are still trying to form a general view of the devastation caused by the storm Agatha. So far, it’s been reported that 2.500 people have been evacuated, at least 500 homes have been destroyed, while 17 have died and 9 disappeared.
DanChurchAid is ready to respond to the situation with food aid and other relief interventions for the victims of Agatha. The help is channeled to the recipients through local partners in Guatemala and Honduras, and is coordinated with the sister organisations in ACT Alliance.
Agatha is the first tropical storm, which marks the beginning of the 2010 Pacific hurricane season.
