An ACT situation report on the response to the disaster in Burma.

While some assistance is getting through, survivors of Cyclone Nargis still await essential relief in the hardest hit areas of the Irrawaddy Delta region. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), a total of 1.3 million people have been reached with varying levels assistance by local and international NGOs, the Red Cross and UN agencies.

- Preliminary assessments in Yangon and the Irrawaddy Delta have been conducted and implementing partners are continuing to provide for the most urgent needs of emergency food aid, water and sanitation as well as temporary shelter and non-food items

- More than 171,600 people provided with emergency relief including food, non-food items and tarpaulins

- More than 2,815 water baskets distributed to communities (each water basket has the capacity to support 250 persons with clean water)

- Established 21 centres for those who lost their homes with an estimated 60,000 people already assisted

- One local partner distributed a one month supply food to 35,000 persons through a partnership with the UN World Food Programme (WFP)

- Additional WFP partnerships will provide 25,000 persons with food for six months

- One local partner has established food management committees in 18 villages

- One local partner has managed to access more than 66,681 people in very hard to reach villages in the Irrawaddy Delta region with distributions of food, non-food and temporary shelter items

- Health training of trainers for 600 partner staff and volunteers will take place in June

- ACT members continue to provide technical and coordination support to local implementing partners

- ACT members and implementing partners are continuing daily coordination meetings with each other and are collaborating with other NGOs and UN agencies

Appeal update

Act International

DanChurchAid is a partner in Action by Churches Together ( ACT), a global alliance of churches and related agencies working to save lives and support communities in emergencies worldwide.

The ACT Coordinating Office released a revision of the preliminary appeal on May 30 with an increased target of US $8,777,092 for water, food, shelter, non-food item and psychosocial assistance to affected communities.
Members of ACT have launched national appeals for funding and are mobilising staff to continue the initial six-month humanitarian response. Pledges and received income contributed towards the appeal to date total more than US $2.7 million (more than 30 percent of the appeal target).

Response coordination

A steering committee of ACT members working with the ACT Coordinating Office is overseeing operations supported by a coordination team present in Bangkok and Yangon.
