TANZANIA - THE WOMEN ARE THE MOST VULNERABLE

When it comes to HIV and AIDS, Tanzania is one of the world’s most affected countries.

Especially girls and young women are infected, because they, more often than not, are unable to say no to unwanted sex or to demand safe sex. They are often infected by their husbands who have unprotected sex with other women or by force or violence.

Furthermore, extreme poverty force many women to trade sex for food or other basic necessities, and traditional ceremonies expose many young girls to unsafe sex.
In addition, the lack of basic health care services and knowledge about rights expose many men and women to risks and worsen the consequences of HIV.

What we did in Tanzania

DanChurchAid’s work in Tanzania has focused on preventing and fighting AIDS.

Our work has included three projects:

  • dotIn northern and northwestern Tanzania we have strengthened the local communities’ ability to prevent HIV and limit the consequences of AIDS.
  • dotIn the border areas close to Uganda we have succeeded in reducing the epidemic, so that less than ten percent are affected today.
  • dotWe have supported the work that is carried out in refugee camps and helped refugees from Burundi return to their homes once the civil war in the country ended.
