"Give a goat" has swept Denmark. In approx. forty days DanChurchAid sold gift certificates for DKK 9.5 million (approx. EURO 1.275 million) for among others household animals, medical equipment and footballs. The budget goal was DKK 2 million.
”It has surpassed out wildest expectations, and it means that we can help many more poor people in the world than we even dared hope for,” says a very happy Henrik Stubkjær, DanChurchAid Secretary General.
The goat is by far the bestseller in DanChurchAid’s Christmas present catalogue, but many other presents have been bought. For instance 14,090 flocks of fowls, 2,827 kitchen gardens and 2,608 swarms of bees.
Mrs Christine Borgstrøm in Copenhagen is one of the happy buyers. ”This year, I have spent DKK 900 (approx. EUR 120) on fowls, goats, condoms, toys and a kitchen garden as presents for my family. For a relatively small amount I have been able to make many people happy, both in Denmark and in other countries,” she explains and continues, ”The presents were well received by my family. They were a humorous element – and I like to help others in an enjoyable way,” she says.
The first families have already received their goats. More than 16,000 goats are on their way to families in Malawi, Ethiopia, Zambia, Uganda, Sudan, Sri Lanka an India.
”Goats are fantastic as presents. They give milk, manure and in the end leather. Of course we know that they must not destroy the environment. Before being delivered to a family, the goat will be immunised and the family will receive training in goat rearing in order to keep it healthy and keep it away from the crops,” explains Henrik Stubkjær.
He underlines that the goat and the other presents are part and parcel of larger projects which aim at changing the structures causing poverty.
