Around 19.000 voluntary collectors all over Denmark defied the cold weather today and ensured that DanChurchAid’s Parish Collection reached DKK 14 million (approx. USD 2.3 million).
The collection result means that DanChurchAid is able to implement planned projects for people affected by hunger in countries such as India, Ethiopia and Malawi.
“Ten days ago, the number of voluntary collectors was not impressive and we were very worried about today’s collection. However the last four days we experienced an incredible support from everybody involved and most importantly the local voluntary collectors have worked hard, which is why we managed to reach DKK 14 million. We did not exceed the record year of the tsunami 2005, but we overcame the negative influence of the Mohammed crisis”, says General Secretary of DanChurchAid, Henrik Stubkjær.
DanChurchAid’s Parish Collection 2006 is thus similar to the collection result of 2004.
The lovely weather conditions may have encouraged people to go shopping and subsequently few people were at home to open the doors to our collectors.
Nevertheless, it is hoped that people will use the DanChurchAid giro form posted to them.
"The collection results tend to vary a lot so we are still anxiously awaiting more responses to come in", explains Henrik Stubkjær. "In return, it is gratifying that we have experienced the greatest support ever from the churches, with over 1262 parishes participating in the collection. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has helped us reach the collection result. The people affected by hunger are in serious need of the money."
