1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. |
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the world's time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme poverty in its many dimensions - poverty, hunger, disease, lack of adequate shelter, and exclusion - while promoting gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability.
MDG history: At the UNs millennium meeting in 2000 the world state leaders agreed on fighting poverty. They signed the Millennium Declaration , which aims at reducing absolute poverty to half in 2015.
The declaration has 8 concrete goals with a time schedule and agreed on indicators for fulfilment. This makes the Millennium Goals effective tools for both politicians and organisations.
The UN Millennium Project is an independent advisory project commissioned by UN Secretary-General and supported by the UN Development Group.
The Millennium Campaign aims to mobilize North and South to achieve the MDGs. Through the campaign and other efforts, UNDP supports advocacy and awareness raising based on national strategies and national needs.
