Destruction of stockpiles in Kalemie

On 24 and 25 April, DanChurchAid executed demolitions of different explosive ordnance and destroyed more than 5 tons of explosive ordnance.

The activities took place after DR Congo army in Kalemie agreed to open 2 weapon depots in the Kalemie naval base. The arms originated from 1st Naval region and DRC army, different army groups as well as the Mai Mai.

5 tons diffenerent explosives destroyed

In the destruction DanChurchAid destroyed approximately 5 tons of different explosive ordnance, i.e.:

  • 345 Anti Tank Mines
  • 9 Anti Personel Mines
  • 306 UXO

This destruction falls well into the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration process. The destruction was overseen by MONUC.

The disarmament is accelerating in Kalemie Area with also Mai-Mai agreeing to surrender stockpiles.

Hence even more items are expected for the stockpile destruction in the very near future.

DanChurchAid was approached to conduct demolitions as it is already executing mine clearance and explosive ordnance disposal activities in the Tanganyika district since October 2005.
