Burundi

Country profile

In Burundi, the last cycle of violence began in 1993 when Hutu-Tutsi fighting and mutual massacres led to massive refugee influxes into Western Tanzania, DR Congo and Rwanda, which was ignited by the killing of the Burundian president.

The conflict claimed 150,000 casualties and involved heavy fighting all over the country. There are estimates that around 1 million Burundians were at one time living outside their homes because of the conflict in the country.

Burundi is now on a good path to peace and reconciliation with free elections successfully completed in July 2005.

A decade of fighting in Burundi left behind the land contaminated by mines and UXO. On the data of known mine casualties, the mine-contaminated provinces in Burundi are: Bujumbura Rural, Bubanza, Cibitoke, Ruyigi, Rutana and Makamba.
