Since mine threats as well as HIV/AIDS prevalence are high in DR Congo, DanChurchAid has developed a new approach combining both mine risk education (MRE) and HIV/AIDS education programmes. Detailed impact surveys of mine-affected areas are also being carried out, assessing the threats posed and their social and economic repercussions. DanChurchAid implements its own Humanitarian Mine Action Programme in DR Congo.
DanChurchAid's HMA project focuses on the long inaccessible and former rebel stronghold district of Tanganyika in the northern part of Katanga province. In 2003, representation was established in Kinshasa to build trust and improve co-ordination. In 2005, the programme, with additional funding of the German Federal Foreign office and Danida, expanded to include two highly mobile clearance teams in Northern Katanga and South Kivu to follow up on the results of the survey activities in order to reduce threats and release thousands of acres of land to help the population rebuild their livelihoods.
