In Kenya the programme is concentrated on political rights and constitutional issues. The activities are focused on the constitutional review process. Kenya is the host country of Kakuma Refugee Camp serving mainly southern Sudanese refugees.
Since year 2000 DanChurchAid has continued to prioritise its engagement in Kenya around Political Space Programmes . In Kenya, DanChurchAid has solely been involved in human rights advocacy programmes with main activities centring on human rights and humanitarian assistance. These programmes have been carried out in cooperation with local partners.
Through the Relief Aid Programme , DanChurchAid has supported the Kakuma Refugee Camp in northern Kenya since 1992, and will continue to address the plight of refugees displaced from neighbouring countries that have been ridden by conflict. The Camp, which is managed by the Lutheran World Federation , accommodates refugees of several nationalities, out of which the southern Sudanese is the largest group. Assistance to the Camp has centred on strengthening the self-management capabilities of the refugees and further, focuses on the gender peculiarities of refugee circumstances through providing support to educate the ‘drop-out’ girls and women who have been victims of violence especially sexually motivated violence.
A small programme on HIV/AIDS related human rights programme with focus on empowerment of girls and young women was started up at the end of 2002. More about DanChurchAid's HIV/AIDS programme .
