The overall objective of the food security work in Malawi is to enhance the fulfillment of the constitutional right to food for the rural poor, in particular women, children and people living with aids (PLWA).

The problems to be addressed

  • Promotion of sustainable food production
  • Access to markets and income generation
  • Gender equality
  • Promotion of human rights
  • Disaster preparedness
  • Addressing issues relevant to HIV/AIDS and micro-credit.

Vulnerable groups in rural and peri-urban areas

The primary target group is the poorest and most vulnerable groups in rural and peri-urban areas in Malawi. The programme work targets those who do not have the means to produce and/or access sufficient food to sustain the lives of the household, neither quantitatively or qualitatively.

Special focus is on families affected by HIV/AIDS , female headed households, children, grandparents or people living with aids, as they have special difficulties in growing food and/or generating incomes. A secondary target group includes Malawian agencies with similar focus areas, agricultural extension services, local networks and service providers.
