Securing lasting peace

Through the programme type Political Space , DanChurchAid's work in Sudan is focusing on contributing to secure a just and lasting peace in Sudan through effective participation of citizenry in governance and development. This entails supporting Sudanese civil society to monitor and influence the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) including advocacy with the international community and state actors for full implementation of the CPA, and developing modes of non-confrontational advocacy. Activities will focus on capacity building of the Sudanese civil society to have a meaningful voice with the ability to participate actively in setting priorities for the reconstruction of Sudan; and facilitating peace and reconciliation as well as cultural exchange in the broadest sense.

Regeneration of livelihoods

Famine in southern Sudan, Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile was rare before the war. The population displacement, erosion of traditional values and coping mechanisms, loss of livestock and agricultural land, loss of livelihoods, destruction of infrastructure, poverty, and the lack of education and basic social services caused by the war has led to large-scale food insecurity. Through the Food Security Programme , DanChurchAid is focusing on regeneration of the livelihoods of marginalised poor people - internally displaced people (IDPs), refugees, returnees and poor host communities.

In the Nuba Mountains, DanChurchAid has taken an innovative cross conflict approach involving the NGOs JASMAR and OSIL from the government and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement sides respectively. This is aimed to contribute to the peace and confidence-building effort between the different sides of the conflict. Every aspect of the mine action programme is carried out together, and joint capacity building has led to increased trust and reliance on each other. The programme encompasses several activities including mine clearance, Mine Risk Education and UXO clearance on an emergency basis. Read more...
