Tanzania

Country profile

Tanzania was created in 1964 through the union of Tanganyika and the Indian Ocean island grouping of Zanzibar.

Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world, with many of its people living below the World Bank poverty line.

The continued political and violent conflicts in the Great Lakes region has a direct impact on Tanzania, and Tanzania is an important stakeholder in the resolution of the conflicts – particularly in Burundi.

The western part of Tanzania is directly affected by the Great Lakes crisis through the presence of huge numbers of refugees.

This situation has stretched local resources, strained Tanzania's relations with neighbours and become a sensitive issue in the new political environment of multiparty Tanzania. Refugees' rights risk to be caught in these political dilemmas. DanChurchAid and its Tanzanian partners consider it of prime importance to try to secure a continued international attention to this complex regional crisis.
