DanChurchAid began its activities in Tanzania in 1963 with support to refugee work. Since then DanChurchAid has supported programmes in Tanzania through the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and Tanganyika Christian Refugee Service (TCRS), the local LWF.
DanChurchAid has a partnership with the LWF/TCRS and with Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania dioceses and supports programmes implemented jointly by the ELCT and the LWF/TCRS.

Tanganyika Christian Refugee Service
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) was officially formed in 1963. Today, it has over 2.5 million members and is one of the largest Lutheran churches in the world. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania has an extensive health care system, with 21 hospitals and numerous dispensaries. Selian Hospital in the Arusha Region is a 100-bed full-service hospital which provides Community Based Health Care in nearby villages, including working with traditional birth attendants in the area of AIDS education and prevention. Another important hospital is Haydom Lutheran Hospital, which has been a center for drought relief in its region. AIDS is a growing problem all over East Africa, and the ELCT is a leader in developing responses. DanChurchAid support ELCT's Kagera HIV/AIDS project in the Kagera Region of North Western Tanzania.
