DanChurchAid began its activities in Tanzania in 1963 with support to refugee work. Since then DanChurchAid has supported programmes in Tanzania through the Lutheran World Federation and Tanganyika Christian Refugee Service (TCRS). TCRS is the local branch of LWF.
DanChurchAid supports ELCT's HIV/AIDS work in Kagera Region. Through the Basic Social Services Programme , the HIV/AIDS work aims at a reduction in the incidence of HIV/AIDS, using a multi sectoral approach encompassing primary prevention, human rights and legal aid, care and counselling and social support. The approach in Kagera has been replicated in five other dioceses of Tanzania with funds previously from Europe Aid , now from Parish Collection 2007 (DKK 4 million) and Denmark’s Collection (DKK 4 million). HIV/AIDS activities in Southern Tanzania funded by global funds. The HIV/AIDS activities in the Kagera Region are integrated under the Uganda HIV/AIDS programme work .
Through the Relief Aid Programme , DanChurchAid has supported TCRS's work with the Burundian refugees in Kibondo. In an agreement with UNHCR , TCRS is responsible for the camp management, food distribution, water and sanitation for the approx. 50,000 refugees that are left in the camp. The camps are currently being emptied. DanChurchAid supports the overall management, self-help programmes for refugees, education and advocacy for refugees' rights.
