The Karimojongs in the North-eastern part of Uganda are among the poorest in the country because of drought, lack of development in the region, and a high illiteracy rate. DanChurchaid and the Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission are funding a drought preparedness program in the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit, which is helping the Karimojongs in developing their traditional way of living as agro-pastoralists.
DanChurchAid has invited two journalists from the leading Ugandan newspapers, The Daily Monitor and The New Vision, to see the work of the local partner KADP.
Uganda's history has been marred by civil wars and economic destruction. The years of Idi Amin and civil wars left a country almost destroyed by 1986, when the current president seized power.
