HIV/AIDS Organisations in Zambia

08/09/2007: DanChurchAid is working with HIV/AIDS through local partners in Zambia. The HIV/AIDS programme focuses on supporting women, orphans and HIV affected families, primarily in rural areas. Human rights, advocacy and gender issues are important cross-cutting aspects in the programme.

Council of Churches of Zambia (CCZ)

The ecumenical umbrella organisation of Christian churches, Council of Churches of Zambia (CCZ) , was established in 1914. DanChuchAid has worked with the organisation since the early 1990s and has supported a number of projects under the HIV/AIDS and Political Space programme types. Among other activities, CCZ provides training to church leaders, e.g. in psychosocial counselling, home based care and HIV/AIDS advocacy. Furthermore, the organisation has established support groups for people living with HIV/AIDS through the Circles of Hope project which aims at breaking the stigma and discrimination related to the disease.

Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ)

Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) is one of DanChurchAid’s long-standing partners. Over the years, it has developed a considerable capacity within the area of HIV/AIDS. CHAZ was created in 1970 as an interdenominational cooperation between church based health institutions in Zambia, and DanChurchAid has supported the organisation since 1993. The objective of CHAZ is to contribute to the prevention of HIV incidence and mitigate the social and economic impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in rural Zambia. The achievements of CHAZ range from the initiation and scale up of home based care facilities, the promotion of voluntary testing and counselling (VCT), care and support for orphans and other vulnerable children, treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to the promotion of rights of people living with HIV and AIDS.

Girl Guides Association of Zambia (GGAZ)

The Girl Guide Association of Zambia (GGAZ) was established in 1924. It is a voluntary, non-profit and non-partisan organisation for girls and young women. More than 15,000 girls and 700 adult girl leaders throughout the country are members of GGAZ. DanChurchAid started working with GGAZ in 2000 in cooperation with the Green Girl Guides in Denmark. With its HIV/AIDS project, GGAZ has established a solid experience in the field of developing relevant, appropriate and effective strategies for raising awareness and strengthening knowledge about HIV/AIDS among adolescents. GGAZ is organising outreach activities by its provincial and district level members as well. The project furthermore supports orphans and people living with AIDS.

Kara Counseling and Training Trust (KCTT)

The humanitarian organisation Kara Counseling and Training Trust (KCTT) was established in 1989. It runs training centres which are used for HIV/AIDS trainings, counselling and testing. Umoyo Training Centre is one of KCCT’s operational centres providing support to vulnerable girls whose parents have died from AIDS. The girls receive training in how to grow vegetables, husbandry, reading/writing, tailoring and carpentry as well as basic instruction in human rights and HIV/AIDS related issues. In the day care centres, HIV-positive children get medical check-ups, assistance in relation to anti-retroviral treatment, food supplementation, education and the possibility to play with other children under the care of trained and supportive staff.

Kwasha Mukwenu

Kwasha Mukwenu (Help Your Neighbour) is a community based women’s group supporting orphans. Its members work as volunteers in Matero, a poor township in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. The main objective of Kwasha Mukwenu is to support AIDS orphans. The support includes providing school fees, school uniforms, transportation to school, food distribution and medical help. The group also informs children about HIV/AIDS. Kwasha Mukwenu has a strong link to and earmarked support from Danish groups.
