DanChurchAid works towards overcoming the imbalance of power between rich and poor in Cambodia by:

  • Building the capacity of poor people, especially women, to engage proactively with Commune Councils to ensure that their rights are protected and their particular needs addressed
  • Representing poor people to have a greater say in national policies which promote the rights and needs of those living in poverty.

What is Political Space?

DanChurchAid defines Political Space as:

"Political Space is about reinforcing the foundations of democracy in order to oppose human rights violations against marginalised groups. Increasing participation in political processes is considered a key strategy for effective poverty reduction."

Food security, human rights and democracy awareness

The Political Space Programme also deals with the issue of food security and further strengthening of the rights perspective to food security by aiming at ensuring rights to land and access to productive resources through advocacy and by strengthening the voice of civil society as well as through provision of legal aid and guidance to poor and marginalised farmers.

Addressing four main issues

DanChurchAid's Political Space programme work in Cambodia is focussing on four main interrelated issues:

  1. Prevention of discrimination against women, including minors
  2. Prevention of exploitation of children
  3. Democratisation and strengthening of civil society
  4. Rule of law and law enforcement.
