Nepal

Country profile

Political and economic instability has dominated the scene in recent Nepalese history, resulting in the murder of the King, the escalation of the Maoist civil war and the consequent deterioration of livelihoods especially among the poorest in the more remote areas. Recently, a cease-fire has been negotiated between the government and the Maoists (strong links to the Communist Party) and it is now up to the two parties to pursue a solution for the benefit of the Nepalese population. Nepal remains one of the most aid-dependent countries in Asia.

The need for good governance, decentralisation and administrative reforms at all levels is endemic, as is the need to curb widespread corruption.

The poorest and most disadvantaged groups of society are hardest hit and deprived of their basic rights. These groups include poor women, Dalits, Kamaiyas (landless, former bonded labourers) and the poorest of those living in remote and marginalised areas.
