DCA Status: How the money was spent

ACT International: The ACT tsunami response:

DanChurchAid was already represented in Sri Lanka before the tsunami struck by the experienced relief officer Cecilie Winther.

Only a few hours after the tsunami hit, Cecilie Winther had contacted DanChurchAid’s local partners in Sri Lanka, organised part of the relief work and contacted DanChurchAid headquarters in Copenhagen ensuring that money was available straight away to start larger relief efforts.

During the reconstruction phase of the tsunami catastrophe, DanChurchAid has focussed on building temporary shelters and helping people regaining income and thus returning to a normal, everyday life as far as possible.

Yet, the building of permanent shelters has been prolonged since local authorities have prohibited the building of houses too close to the sea.

More information about the tsunami relief efforts in Sri Lanka and India can be viewed on our Danish website .
