Mr Raviraj was an active parliamentarian. Thursday 9 November, Mr Raviraj had taken part in a protest against the shelling of a camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) in the eastern Vakarai district that led to thousands of IDPs trying to flee from the camp. DanChurchAid is supporting IDPs in Vakarai.

Since the peace talks between the government of Sri Lanka and LTTE broke down in Geneva in late October, violence has increased in the North and East of Sri Lanka, and now also in Colombo.

Civil socity organisations have once again joined hands to issue a concerned statement on the deterioating human rights situation as well as the humanitarian situation for the many internally displaced people in the country.
