Honduras

Partners: Food security

01/05/2007: DanChurchAid currently has five partner organisations working with food security in Honduras. At different levels, they are all dedicated to rural development and sustainable agriculture, and in the recent past have begun working more with advocacy.

Organismo Cristiano de Desarrollo Integral de Honduras (OCDIH)

OCDIH is a Christian based local NGO working with food security and indigenous populations. It is one of the strongest actors in Western Honduras in the areas of sustainable agriculture, advocacy and disaster preparedness. DanChurchAid's cooperation with OCDIH started in 2002 and since then has focused on projects that seek to improve food availability, nutrition and coping strategies. OCDIH provides technical assistance for sustainable agriculture, food storage techniques and productive diversification. The organisation is an active member of the Honduran ACT network, contributing with its capacities for working with the strengthening of the local institutional capacities, particularly for drought prevention and mitigation as well as advocacy work.

Comisión de Acción Social Menonita (CASM)

CASM is one of the biggest local NGOs in Honduras working with emergencies and disaster preparedness. It was one of the most important actors in the emergency after hurricane Mitch and is recognised for its work during other tropical storms. Since 2002, DanChurchAid has been supporting CASM’s local offices in Lempira, a department located in the Western region of Honduras, as well as in the Aguán river watershed, located on the North–Eastern coast. Due to its rich experience with emergencies and disaster preparedness, CASM has been invited by DanChurchAid to participate in the regional ACT network. CASM is currently implementing two projects that integrate disaster preparedness with the improvement of agricultural practices, micro-credit and capacity building of local organisations.

Cooperativa Mixta Fraternidad de Mujeres Ltda. (COMFRAMUL)

COMFRAMUL is a national membership organisation with more than 5000 men and women as well as 215 “solidarity groups” affiliated. It was established in 1997 with the purpose of providing small micro credit loans for women, as women’s access to the country’s national financial system is limited. COMFRAMUL has local offices in Morazán, Santa Rosa de Copán, Choluteca and Tegucigalpa, the latter functioning as the central office. DanChurchAid started cooperating with COMFRAMUL in 2003 and is focusing on strengthening the administrative, organisational and institutional capacities of the organisation, in particular the Santa Rosa branch.

Asociación de Organismos no Gubernamentales (ASONOG)

ASONOG is a network of 17 organisations whose main objective is to support advocacy processes. The advocacy agenda of ASONOG is concentrated on topics related to citizen participation, the consolidation of municipal associations and spaces for coordination at provincial level and, ultimately, participating in the discussion and elaboration of Regional Poverty Reduction Strategies in the Western part of the country.

DanChurchAid’s partners OCDIH and CASM are the most important organisations in the network, which also includes local community and women organisations.

DanChurchAid started cooperating with ASONOG in 2000. ASONOG has a strong capacity and experience in integrated local development and in coordination between civil society and local authorities. DanChurchAid currently supports ASONOG in establishing an advocacy network at the regional level where issues such as food security can be raised in cooperation with other organisations. Red de Desarrollo Sostenible de Honduras (RDS-HN)

The Network of Sustainable Development of Honduras (RDS-HN) is an NGO, which is part of a worldwide network of organisations working with research, dissemination and exchange of information and knowledge on development issues. RDS-HN has developed an internet portal ( http://rds.org.hn ) covering issues such as migration and remittances, sustainable agriculture, environmental protection and resource management, among others.

DanChurchAid began cooperating with RDS-HN in 2004, supporting a study on the theme of migration and remittances in the Western region of Honduras. Furthermore, RDS-HN is carrying out capacity building of other of DanChurchAid’s partners. Visit website: http://rds.org.hn
