Casa Alianza is leading in the fight for the rights of street children in Central America. In Honduras, Casa Alianza in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula is attempting to give street children a possibility to improve their lives. The children are offered a safe place to stay, and they are given help for rehabilitation, education and legal aid. In order to protect and defend their basic human rights, Casa Alianza is working both at street level as well as doing advocacy work towards the Honduran authorities, the police and the population in general. Some cases have been presented at international human rights courts.
Honduras counts for about 60 % of all HIV/AIDS-positive in Central America, and the quick spread of HIV-infected people is a constantly increasing threat to the development of the country. DanChurchAid is cooperating with Casa Corazón Misericordia, a small orphanage in San Pedro Sula for children infected with HIV/AIDS. The aim is to take care of the children at the same time as creating a greater consciousness of the problem in the population. Casa Corazón has received support from DanChurchAid since 1997. The funds are used to support the children’s daily needs such as medicine, school supplies, and food as well as to build new rooms in the orphanage as the number of children is growing.
Since 1994, MCM has worked with vulnerable and poor children and youth in Nueva Suyapa, one of the poorest areas of Tegucigalpa, capital city of Honduras. Nueva Suyapa is a hub for a great majority of the street children and gang members of the capital.
MCM has established an educational and recreational centre for the children and youth of Nueva Suyapa, which currently has five day care centres, a school, a health clinic and facilities for other recreational activities. Furthermore, the project has the objective to train volunteer face-to-face street counsellors.
