Deterioration of education and health

10/05/2006: A fifth of the population in Kazakhstan is living below the poverty line. Children in particular are affected as are pensioners and people on low incomes. Though the country is oil-rich, the surplus isn’t distributed equally.

Not everybody goes to school

Public expenditure on the social system has fallen steadily since 1991, affecting the school system. For many children this means that they don’t go to school.

Whereas everybody under the Soviet Union received an education, the percentage of children now who complete their schooling is falling year by year. This is especially true of courses of a certain quality. Children living in rural areas are affected the most.

Professional know-how is disappearing

The health system has also deteriorated since the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is of course because the government isn’t allocating enough money but it is also caused by professionals migrating to Russia where wages are higher.
