HIV boom in Russia

24/07/2006: In 1995 about 1,000 Russians were reported to be infected with HIV. In 2006 the number had risen to 375,000. The UN estimates that the actual number could be close to 1, 6 million - roughly 1% of the entire Russian population.

More than 90% of the infected are young male drug addicts. There is a growing tendency in sexual transmitted HIV-infections making the disease a problem for the general population.

  • The majority of Russia's drug addicts are between 10 and 25 years old.

The exact number is unknown, but an estimate suggests that there are between three and five million drug abusers. These are at immediate risk to be infected with HIV through used syringes.

Preventative measures

One of the main target groups for DanChurchAid’s partner organisations is young people between 14 and 29 years old. In order to reduce the number of HIV/ AIDS infected people within this group a combination of preventative measures is used. This includes medical treatment as well as psychological and social rehabilitation.

Help for prisoners with HIV/ AIDS

DanChurchAid’s partner organisations are also seeking to improve conditions for HIV positive prisoners and to help former prisoners infected with HIV to become re-integrated in to society.
