DCA Mine Action

Challenges

Nine out of Burma/Myanmar’s 14 States are contaminated with landmines, and most of these landmines have been laid along border areas, typically where internal unrest is ongoing.

As a result of this heavy contamination as well as the fact that mine laying continues to this day, Burma/Myanmar is currently experiencing some of the highest mine accident rates in the world today, even though verifiable data is difficult to gather. In 2009, the Landmine Monitor reported 262 casualties out of which 259 were civilians.

According to the UN, many more go unrecorded because of the difficulty of access into Burma/Myanmar due to the continued fighting in some areas.

What we do in Burma/Myanmar

There are currently no demining activities going on inside Burma/Myanmar due to difficulty of access and continuous mine laying by both Government forces and opposition groups (i.e. ethnic minority groups, Non-State Actors).

Reflecting this reality, DCA’s activities include supporting Mine Risk Education (MRE) provided to the civilian population and a prosthetic clinic, which produces and brings out prosthetic legs to mine victims who are otherwise unassisted.
