Recovery of Agricultural Production, Nyunzu.

Since July 2009 DCA has been implementing an agricultural recovery project, assisting 3200 households to strengthen their production and economic recovery capacities.

Farmers are organised in groups to gain access to inputs, to knowledge on improved agricultural technologies, and access to micro-credit.

The project is a continuation of a mine action project where land was cleared for farming.

DCA mine action has cleared in the region of 324,000m² of land in Kabumba. The programme has also completed clearance of a minefield in Mitondo, where 7,400m² of prime land is now safe to use for agricultural purposes.

Kabumba and Mitondo are both highly fertile areas where the potential to improve food security locally and nationally is vast.

Some of the land cleared will be used within the P4P project, mentioned below, for seed multiplication. In addition, DCA has two roaming survey and explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) multi-task teams, clearing spot tasks simultaneously to mapping.

Gender Based Violence project, South Kivu.

In June this year DCA started a 3 year project, working simultaneously with the victims and perpetrators of GBV, in four territories of South Kivu.

We are working with three local organisations to help reduce the occurrence of GBV cases performed by the police and military. We aim to achieve this by promoting human rights, capacity building of our partners, and awareness-raising on the causes, consequences and appropriate responses to GBV.

HIV/AIDS messaging will be a running theme throughout this project.

The project provides care and support for the survivors of GBV, promotes human rights at the community level and provides legal support to victims where necessary. The project also seeks to work closely with the military and the police on awareness of human rights violations and to provide psycho-social support and family mediation activities.

Purchase 4 Progress, Kabalo.

DCA is about to commence a new project with the World Food Programme as part of a global innovation to boost production capacity of smallholder farmers.

Through this initiative, low-income farmers will have better access to reliable local and regional markets on which to sell their surplus crops at a competitive price. WFP will serve as a major force on the markets, buying cereals directly from smallholder farmers.

In Kabalo, WFP has partnered with FAO to provide agricultural inputs and technical knowledge, and DCA to assist in augmenting the commercial system by bringing producers and traders together. We will provide training on fair trade and fair profit, empowering producers and traders alike through a trading system where ‘students’ will graduate from intensive on-the-job training with a new skill-set adapted to the local market.
