Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the Central America region. Sixty percent of the population lives under the poverty line, and the numbers are even higher in rural areas.
DanChurchAid is mainly supporting organisations working in Western Honduras, which is one of the poorest and most isolated regions of the country. Many people in rural areas experience high levels of food insecurity.
Political power is concentrated in the hands of a few elites reluctant to share their traditional privileges. Honduras experiences great problems stemming from a lack of legal justice and widespread impunity.
Corruption permeates most of Honduran society, not least government and
state, including the judicial system. Impunity for the rich and powerful, also in
relation to politically motivated crimes, is the rule. Organised crime, often
involving prominent politicians and other public figures, and criminal violence
have reached alarming levels.
