In DCA we strive to make as much impact as possible against our mission and goals. Often this will be through the implementation at scale of approaches and solutions to development and humanitarian challenges proven to work, and with significant degrees of evidence. At other times, it will be through the pursuit of new approaches and potential new solutions driven by changing contexts, new technological developments, new partnerships or other new insights pointing towards new ways of doing things that might enable us to make a stronger impact on our global goals: saving lives, building resilience and fighting extreme inequality.
DCA’s commitment to innovation is based on this insight – that the most effective ways of bringing about the changes we want to see in world might not be known to us yet. For this reason, innovation is central to DCA’s new International Strategy 2019 – 2022.
Over the past couple of years DCA has invested significantly in strategically supporting innovation across our programme portfolio.
The DCA Innovation Fund was established in April 2018 to further encourage and enable innovation in support of DCA’s global goals. Two rounds of funding took place in 2018, and a total of 19 projects have been supported. They cover innovations in key strategic areas for DCA, including:
Partnerships are essential to our innovation efforts. We engage in global alliances to find game changing solutions to global problems and we leverage our local partnerships and networks to ensure that new solutions are developed with the users. We also partner with technology experts to identify new ways for DCA to use technology to support active citizenship programming; We explore ways to utilize micro-insurance for increased resilience; and we partner with experts in the impact start-up and financing fields to develop new partnerships and business models for innovation.
