Project Description

Through the Danida Market Development Partnerships (DMDP), GAIN has provided 1.073.825,50 EUR to DCA to address the need for improved nutrition in Ethiopia. Although being the main source of income in the country, the agricultural sector has experience limited development due to lack of key resources. Therefore, the partnership action between Arla Foods Ingredients, GAIN, Dansk Industri and DanChurchAid focuses on promoting sustainable market development in Ethiopia by increasing the productivity of local processors and smallholder farmers in the dairy value chain, and enhancing the nutritional value of high quality milk-based products to fight malnutrition.

In contrast to previous efforts in Ethiopia, the partnership will drive development by a pull strategy, which emphasizes:

  • Stabilising and increasing demand for local dairy products through local marketing and communication efforts
  • Working closely with local processors on product and process innovation
  • Supporting smallholder farmer to improve quality, safety and yields of milk and access to market through regular milk collection.

On this basis, sustainable market development will reach all actors in the value chain; serving as an inclusive business model for scaling up potentially also in other regions and countries.

DCA is grateful for its collaboration with:

GAIN, BoP Learning Lab (Danish Industry), Arla Foods Ingredients (AFI), ORANA A/S, Sustainable Environment and Development Action (SEDA), Loni Agro Industry PLC (Loni), Rut and Hirut Cow Breeding.
