Strengthening Communities Ability to Fight COVID-19

Implementing interventions to strengthen the ability of poorer communities to fight against the epidemic

DanChurchAid in Zimbabwe

In response to the COVID-19 global pandemic, DanChurchAid in Zimbabwe is making sure ‘no one is left behind’ in the fight against COVID-19, by strengthening the ability of poorer communities in the remotest parts of Zimbabwe to fight against the epidemic and its negative effects by providing PPE to schools in poor communities, delivering resilience training on sanitizer and detergent-making, and ensuring access to life saving information on COVID-19 protocols.

With the rise of the Omicron variant, DanChurchAid together with the Ministry of Health and Child Care are conducting vaccination and education campaigns in remote rural communities ensure that the most vulnerable are vaccinated, while working with local ambassadors to fight mis-information at community level. In Zimbabwe 68% of the population lives in rural areas, making it difficult to reach them. The same rural communities have been hardest hit by the pandemic due to limited access to poor health facilities.

Porous boarders have made remote communities even more vulnerable to the pandemic, due to cross-boarder migration of household heads and youth in search of livelihoods to support their families, after years of economic decline in Zimbabwe. DanChurchAid has helped reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect communities against its negative effects. Our efforts will bring the country closer to achieving the goal of herd immunity.
