The Issue
The displacement affecting North Kivu Province continues to be felt following clashes between the M23 and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), with significant consequences for Rutshuru, Nyiragongo and Lubero territories, and later spillover into Masisi as the M23 advanced. As a result, much of North Kivu Province remains affected by a persistent humanitarian crisis, with needs across several sectors, including protection, health, nutrition, education and Shelter/Non-Food Items (NFI). The Nyiragongo, Mweso, Kirotshe and Birambizo Health Zones are particularly marked by the return of a population composed mainly of households returning after nearly two years of forced displacement to Goma due to the armed conflicts that affected the area between 2023 and 2025. These returns have taken place in a context of widespread housing destruction, leaving most households without adequate shelter and without the capacity to rebuild on their own. Returnees face numerous challenges, resulting in persistent needs across several sectors, including Shelter/NFI.
The Project
In this context, DanChurchAid (DCA), through the project implemented in North Kivu, has planned an intervention to distribute NFI kits, construct transitional shelters, and rehabilitate transitional shelters for returnees and displaced people.
The Change
- Households reached by the project will have improved access to shelter that meets standard requirements.
- Households reached by this project will have access to essential household items for domestic use.
- Carpentry skills will be made available in the project areas.
Results
- 400 transitional shelters constructed
- 1,600 transitional shelters rehabilitated
- 40 people trained in carpentry and equipped
- 10,500 NFI kits distributed
