The Issue
Storm Daniel made landfall in Libya on September 10-11, 2023. The storm brought unprecedented rainfall, flash floods, and gale-force winds, which led to the collapse of two dams in the city of Derna. The flooding pushed entire neighborhoods into the sea and caused extensive damage across Derna and surrounding municipalities, destroying homes, disrupting health and education services, restricting access to food and non-food items due to damaged roads, and causing psychological distress. The overall goal of this project was to address the immediate needs of households and communities severely impacted by Storm Daniel.
The Project
The 14-month project aimed to strengthen the resilience and well-being of communities affected by Storm Daniel in Derna, Libya. Through capacity sharing, DCA’s local partners Libyan Red Crescent (LRC) and the International Organization for People and Children with Disabilities (IOPCD), were able to offer meaningful psychosocial support activities for children and youth in Derna, while DCA and Libyan Red Crescent distributed food boxes and shelter-related items to households, and delivered hygiene supplies and personal protective equipment to medical centres.
The Change
With funding from Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA) funding, DCA Libya aimed to alleviate the urgent need for food and non-food items, distribute hygiene items and personal protective equipment for medical centres, and provide training for our local partners, LRC and IOPCD to provide psychosocial support activities children and youth in Derna.
The Results
Throughout the duration of the project from 15 February 2024 – 14 April 2025, the project achieved the following results:
