07/12: It is time to make headway for adaptation
Side event based on the Adaptation Futures 2023 conference and the high-level adaptation roundtable at UNGA
As global temperatures increase, the need for adaptation, around the world, becomes more and more evident. As the recent report from the UN Environment Program, UNEP, shows, the gap between adaptation action, and the need for adaptation, is huge. The world must therefore make headway for adaptation, now.
This challenge will be addressed at the COP28 side event ‘Making headway for adaptation’ co-led by Ouranos and DanChurchAid the 8th of December, 16.45-18.15 GST, in side event room 5 Area B6, building 83 and broadcast live on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjJfcfJOITI&list=PLBcZ22cUY9RLMkm-apVgzZ8JSi0Tsywd3&index=14
The speakers are:
- H.E. Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Special Envoy to the Prime Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Bangladesh
- Agnes Tingstrøm Klinken, Deputy Head of Mission, Danish Embassy, Abu Dhabi
- Inamara Santos Mélo, Coordenadora Geral de Adaptação à Mudança do Clima, Brazil
- Alain Bourque, Executive Director of Ouranos and Adaptation Futures 2023 co-chair, Canada
- Maria del Pilar Bueno, National Council of Scientific and Technical Research, Argentina
- Ayesha Constable, Climate Justice & Gender Researcher and Activist, Jamaica
- Johanna Nalau, adaptation scientist with a PHD on climate adaptation from Griffith University, Australia
The side event builds on two important meetings, during the past months
On the side lines of the UN General Assembly in September, the governments of Bangladesh and Denmark, hosted a high-level roundtable, to explore options for scaling up adaptation finance. The result has been captured in a summary paper, by DanChurchAid.
In October, the 7th edition of the Adaptation Futures international conference, organized by Ouranos in Montreal, brought together more than 2,000 participants from 127 countries. A success which highlights a growing interest in adaptation.
At COP28 adaptation constitutes one of the top priorities. A framework for the Global Goal on Adaptation will be adopted, and the need for scaled up adaptation will be addressed in the Global Stock Take.
Comments from Ouranos and DanChurchAid:
“While interest in adaptation appears to be growing as the effects of climate change are felt, the practical implementation of adaptation is struggling to keep pace. The “Making headway for adaptation” side event should make it possible to accentuate the dynamic and find how to remove the blockages to progress faster.” Alain Bourque, Executive Director of Ouranos and Adaptation Futures 2023 co-chair.
“Adaptation is not an option; it is a necessity, and it is needed now. The adaptation gap is huge, and growing, and this summit must deliver a bold and ambitious adaptation outcome. That means a strong commitment by developed countries to deliver on their promise to double adaptation finance, and to strive for closing the adaptation finance gap.” Mattias Söderberg, the Global Climate Lead of DanChurchAid.
