When war becomes a child’s playground

In Gaza, Explosive Ordnance Risk Education sessions held by DCA/NCA are saving lives by teaching children how to avoid danger.

After more than 600 days of ongoing conflict, remnants of war have become part of the daily landscape for thousands of children in Gaza and as result, for many, including 11-year-old Yazan, these deadly remnants are no longer seen as threats. They’ve become part of a dangerous new “normal.”

During a life-saving awareness session on Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE), Yazan’s parents raised concerns about their son’s growing habit of collecting and playing with used bullets from the rubble, mistaking them for toys and setting fire to other remnants. His case is sadly not unique as children’s natural curiosity puts them at even greater risk.

After multiple one-on-one sessions held with Yazan to explain the dangers of handling such items, what it could mean for him, his friends, or his family if these remnants were to explode or if he came across a live item. He was also guided on how to safely respond if he ever finds similar objects again.

Such cases are a reminder of the critical importance of awareness-raising efforts, especially for children. In prolonged conflict, parents are often consumed with daily survival, securing food, water, shelter, and may not always be able to monitor every move their children make.

Ensuring children themselves are informed and equipped to recognize and avoid danger is a vital part of protecting them.
